Most Popular Auto Parts

While specific part popularity data isn’t detailed for Allied U-Pick-It, their self-service yard specializes in reusable OEM parts that typically represent the best value compared to buying new. Based on industry norms and the yard’s focus on “original auto parts,” these are the most commonly purchased items:

Mechanical Components

Engines and transmissions top the list of valuable salvage items, as these represent major investments when purchased new. Complete units or partially disassembled engines can save buyers hundreds or thousands of dollars compared to new or remanufactured options.

Suspension and steering parts like shocks, struts, control arms, and steering racks are also frequently purchased due to their high replacement cost when bought new.

Body and Exterior Parts

Doors, hoods, bumpers, and fenders are popular choices for collision repairs. These body parts are often sold as complete assemblies, offering significant savings over new parts.

Wheels and tires (including alloy rims) provide excellent value, especially for vehicles with expensive factory wheel options.

Mirrors and glass components like windshields and side windows are commonly sought for both cosmetic and safety-related repairs.

Interior Components

Seats and dashboard parts including trim, consoles, and instrument clusters are frequently salvaged for restorations or replacements.

Electronics such as stereos, GPS units, and various sensors may be available if they remain functional, though quality can vary.

Exhaust Components

Mufflers, catalytic converters, and exhaust pipes are frequently purchased to meet emissions requirements or for performance modifications.

If you’re specifically looking to buy OEM used side mirrors from the junkyard, Allied U-Pick-It’s self-service approach allows you to inspect these parts carefully before purchase.

Tools and Equipment Needed

When visiting Allied U-Pick-It to pull parts yourself, bringing the right tools is essential for a successful trip. While the yard doesn’t explicitly state which tools they provide, here’s what you’ll need based on the parts you’re hunting:

Part Type Recommended Tools Notes
Engine & Transmission • Socket set (metric & SAE)

• Torque wrench

• Engine pullers

• Torx/Allen keys

Critical for accessing bolts in tight spaces
Suspension & Steering • Strut removal tools

• Ball joint splitters

• Hub pullers

Specialized tools often needed
Body Panels & Interiors • Panel removal tools

• Drill

• Sheet metal snips

For clean extraction of panels
Electrical Parts • Wire strippers/crimpers

• Torque limiters

For sensitive connectors
Brakes & Wheels • Brake bleeding kit

Key Considerations:

  • Power tools: Bring cordless drills and drivers, as yards rarely provide these
  • Safety gear: Gloves, goggles, and a jack stand (if applicable)
  • Part-specific tools: For example, a radiator removal kit if extracting cooling systems

If you’re looking to salvage a used car radiator to find affordable parts, make sure to bring the right cooling system tools to safely remove these parts without damage.

Common Questions About Junkyards

Whether you’re new to junkyards like Allied U-Pick-It or a seasoned DIYer, here are answers to common questions about salvage yards:

1. How do junkyards operate, and what services do they offer?

Junkyards function through specialized operations focused on recycling, parts salvage, or vehicle disposal. Key processes include:
Dismantling: Removing reusable parts (engines, transmissions, electronics) for resale
Recycling: Crushing vehicles for metal extraction (steel, aluminum) and environmentally responsible disposal of hazardous fluids
Parts Sales: Offering used parts (e.g., batteries, tires) to repair shops or DIY customers

Examples include “U-Pull-It” facilities where customers locate and extract parts themselves, or traditional salvage yards that catalog inventory for easier access.

2. What happens to cars after they’re sent to a junkyard?

The fate of vehicles depends on the junkyard type:

Junkyard Type Process
Salvage Yard Parts are removed and sold; remaining chassis is recycled
Scrapyard Vehicle is crushed, and metals are processed for reuse
Wrecking Yard Combines salvage and scrap methods, often prioritizing part recovery

Hazardous materials like batteries, oil, and coolant are disposed of per environmental regulations.

3. Do I need the vehicle’s keys or registration to sell it to a junkyard?

  • Keys: Not required for recycling, as the vehicle will be dismantled regardless
  • Registration: While preferred for processing, salvage operators can assist in obtaining replacement documents through state DMV portals if missing

Procedurally:
1. Call the junkyard to provide vehicle details (condition, mileage)
2. Receive a quote based on local scrap metal prices and part demand
3. Arrange pickup/tow service if agreed

4. What factors determine the value of a junk car?

Key valuation criteria include:
Vehicle Condition: Running condition, damage extent, and repair needs
Market Demand for Parts: High-demand parts (e.g., airbags, catalytic converters) increase value
Scrap Metal Prices: Current rates for steel, aluminum, and other metals dictate cash offers
Location: Proximity to salvage facilities affects towing costs and quotes

5. Can customers purchase used parts directly from junkyards?

Yes, most junkyards sell parts through:
Salvage Yards: Pre-removed parts stored in organized inventories
U-Pull-It Facilities: Self-service yards where customers locate and extract parts themselves
Price Transparency: Parts are typically priced lower than new OEM equivalents, with warranties varying by facility

6. How do salvage yards differ from scrapyards or wrecking yards?

Type Focus Operational Example
Salvage Yard Rebuilding/restoring vehicles Selling titled vehicles
Scrapyard Recycling raw materials Crushing cars for metal
Wrecking Yard General salvage and part sales Similar to salvage yards in some regions

7. What legally qualifies as a junkyard?

Per Fairbanks North Star Borough regulations (mirroring many U.S. standards):
Definition: A junkyard requires >1,000 sq. ft. of land dedicated to scavenging operations, including storage, sale, or dismantlement of junk
Exclusions: Does not include regular automotive repair shops, farm equipment storage, or limited personal scrap storage
Note: Zoning laws and definitions vary by jurisdiction.

If you’re interested in finding the best deals on used tires and wheels, a self-service yard like Allied U-Pick-It can offer significant savings over retail options.

I use to use this place all the time, but for the passed few years the price for there parts has been going up and up, but on my last visit I went to get a radiator, I looked on line at a new one and it was $.59.00 plus tax and I could in store pick up next day at an auto parts store I go to and it had a years warranty these peoples price for a used one was over $ over 70,00 and had a 30 day exchange warranty. I couldn't believe it the next day I went to Muncie ( Midway you pull it ) and got one for $ 52.00 and a 30 day warranty.. it's in my vehicle.

Came to get a door latch for my rear door. I got one took it to the counter. Lady told me 28 bucks. I said they are only 34 brand new even showed her on my phone. She says nothing I can do I don't do the pricing. You could have knocked the price down a few bucks I would have bought the part. Now you have a park there sitting on the counter with no part number you don't even know what it goes to. You will eventually throw it away because you can't sell it. Could have made a few bucks to make somebody's wage. But if that's the way you do business good luck in the future. I'll go ahead and pay the extra six bucks at least I know the one I'm getting his new I was taking a chance with your part.

Horrible place to take your car. Corporate gave them a quote. It didn't show in computer Corporate fixed it. The lady then lost my information. I ended up spending over 2 hours just trying to get arid of my car. Went to the boss and he defended her actions, he then went on to say that it wasn't their fault even though the lady just didn't finish the information. Wont be back

My husband and I thought that by going to a junk yard to pull our own parts would save us money, I can tell you that it would have been better just paying the extra money and buy new. For alot of reasons, one it was over a 100 degrees and humid as all hell out. 2 my husband has a broken hand this ain't good. Everytime he tried working on the door to get the cable mechanism out he kept hitting his hand on the door. 3 people leave everything lay everywhere there is so much broken glass you have to be so careful. Really I think for just fun purposes they go around breaking windows that's not fun. You have to be so careful while you're in there my husband found a pillow in one of the other vehicles luckily I was able to use it while I was helping him so I didn't get glass in my arms. 4 we had got such bad sunburn it wasn't funny and we both were so severely dehydrated. 5 You think they would be cheaper Plus you're the one pulling the stuff out and out of all the junk yards that I have been to this one is very high. They charge over half of what it would be new. You may get a break on Engines & Transmissions but who really knows I didn't ask.
