Most Popular Auto Parts at Allen’s

When it comes to shopping for used auto parts, knowing which items are commonly purchased can help you understand what to expect at a salvage yard like Allen’s. Based on industry patterns and customer demand, these are the most frequently sought-after used parts:

Major Powertrain Parts

Engines and transmissions top the list of high-value parts customers seek at wrecking yards. These expensive parts can cost thousands when bought new, making used options extremely attractive. Allen’s, like many established salvage yards, maintains an inventory of these critical parts.

A customer reported purchasing a motor for around $400, though prices vary based on make, model, and condition. Complete engine assemblies and transmissions are prime targets for budget-conscious repairs.

Differential assemblies are another popular powertrain component, especially for truck owners facing expensive repairs.

Body Panels and Exterior Parts

Body parts are in constant demand due to collision repairs and rust replacement. Popular items include:

  • Doors: Complete door assemblies with glass and hardware
  • Hoods: Front and rear
  • Bumpers: Front and rear bumper assemblies
  • Fenders: Often damaged in minor collisions
  • Mirrors: Side mirrors are frequently damaged and relatively easy to replace
  • Grilles and trim pieces: For cosmetic repairs

Wheels and Tires

People often visit salvage yards looking for OEM wheels at a fraction of dealer prices. Finding a matching set of factory alloy wheels can save hundreds of dollars. Slightly used tires with good tread remaining are also popular purchases.

If you’re in the market for affordable wheels and tires, salvage yards like Allen’s can be an excellent resource.

Electronic Parts

As vehicles become more electronic-dependent, these parts have become increasingly sought-after:

  • ECUs (Engine Control Units): Often costing $500+ new
  • Infotainment systems: Expensive to replace at dealerships
  • Instrument clusters: Especially for older or discontinued models
  • Power window motors and switches: Common failure points

Exhaust System Parts

Exhaust parts face constant exposure to the elements, making them common replacement items:

  • Mufflers: Often rust out in older vehicles
  • Catalytic converters: Extremely expensive when new
  • Exhaust manifolds: Especially for trucks and older vehicles

Suspension and Steering Parts

Quality suspension parts from salvage yards can restore your vehicle’s ride quality:

  • Shocks and struts: Popular for DIY suspension upgrades
  • Control arms: Common wear items, especially in the front suspension
  • Steering racks: Expensive when purchased new
  • Sway bars and links: For handling improvements

Hours of Operation

Allen’s Used Auto Parts maintains regular business hours to serve the Tampa community:

Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Saturday: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Sunday: Closed

The yard is open on Saturdays with reduced hours, giving weekend warriors a chance to find the parts they need for DIY projects. Remember that holiday schedules may vary, so calling ahead before a visit is always recommended, especially around major holidays.

Tools Needed for Pulling Parts

When visiting Allen’s Used Auto Parts, you’ll need to bring your own tools since the yard focuses on supplying parts rather than providing equipment for disassembly. Here’s what you should pack:

Essential Hand Tools

  • Socket set (both metric and SAE sizes)
  • Ratchet and breaker bar for extra leverage
  • Adjustable wrench for non-standard sizes
  • Screwdrivers (flathead, Phillips, and Torx)
  • Pliers (needle-nose and adjustable)

Specialty Tools

  • Pry bar for separating stuck parts
  • Hammers (rubber mallet and metal hammer)
  • Utility knife and wire cutters for hoses and wires
  • Penetrating oil (like WD–40) for rusted bolts

Safety and Organization

  • Work gloves for protection
  • Flashlight or headlamp for better visibility
  • Plastic bags and markers to organize small parts

Coming prepared will save you time and frustration during your visit. While Allen’s offers expertise in helping you find the right parts, having the proper tools ensures you can successfully remove the parts you need.

Allen’s Used Auto Parts Warranty Information

When purchasing used auto parts, understanding the warranty coverage is crucial. Allen’s Used Auto Parts provides specific warranty terms to protect your investment:

Standard Warranty Coverage

  • Duration: 30-day coverage applies to all parts, including transmissions
  • Scope: Covers part defects but excludes issues from improper installation, tampering, or normal wear
  • Core Charges: A refundable deposit (around $50) may apply for certain exchangeable parts

Warranty Limitations

Allen’s warranty policies include several important restrictions:
Inspection Policies: Once parts are inspected by customers, refund options may be limited
Heat Tab Integrity: Damaged heat indicators can void warranty coverage
Labor Coverage: The standard warranty typically covers parts only, not installation labor

No information about extended warranty options is available in verified sources, suggesting that the standard 30-day coverage is the primary offering. The warranty appears to be included with purchase at no additional cost, though replacement fees may apply during exchanges.

For specific warranty details on high-value items like used engine blocks or transmissions, direct confirmation with Allen’s is recommended before purchase.

Key Differences:

LKQ Pick Your Part (5109 Causeway Boulevard) stands out with its massive 90+ acre inventory that’s refreshed daily. They provide free wheelbarrows and engine hoists for customers who prefer to remove parts themselves. They also actively buy junk cars, offering top dollar with free towing.

Orniel’s Used Auto Parts (4401 E 10th Ave) specializes in Honda and Acura parts and modifications. Beyond just selling parts, they offer engine swaps, race car builds, paint/bodywork, and basic services like oil changes. They receive praise for fair pricing and hands-on customer assistance.

Compared to these competitors, Allen’s Used Auto Parts relies on its long history and traditional approach to parts sales. While competitors like LKQ offer more structured services and Orniel’s provides specialized expertise, Allen’s continues to serve as a straightforward option for general auto parts needs in Tampa.

Common Questions About Allen’s Used Auto Parts

When visiting junkyards like Allen’s Used Auto Parts in Tampa, customers often have practical questions about operations, policies, and part reliability. Here are seven common inquiries with detailed answers:

1. What are the hours of operation?
Allen’s Used Auto Parts operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. They’re closed on Sundays. These hours allow both weekday and weekend access for customers with different schedules.

2. Do they offer warranties or accept returns?
Allen’s enforces a standard 30-day warranty on most parts. However, customer reviews indicate a strict “as-is” policy in some cases, with refunds being denied for defective engines after purchase. It’s best to thoroughly inspect parts before purchase and understand the specific warranty terms for your item.

3. What is the core charge policy?
Core charges are refundable deposits for returning old parts. At Allen’s, customers have reported an additional $50 core charge during engine exchanges. These fees encourage the return of recyclable parts and vary depending on the type of part. Be sure to ask about any applicable core charges before purchase.

4. Can I inspect parts before purchasing?
Allen’s has reportedly discouraged disassembling parts on-site in some instances, as noted when a buyer was barred from thoroughly checking an engine in their parking lot. For critical parts, ask about their current evaluation policies before visiting, or consider bringing a mechanic to help assess the part’s condition.

5. How extensive is the parts inventory?
While Allen’s doesn’t publish its inventory online, the Tampa area hosts numerous salvage yards (with 23 nearby listings), suggesting a broad network for sourcing parts. Allen’s long history in the business indicates they maintain connections throughout the industry to help locate hard-to-find parts.

6. Are used parts safe and reliable?
Quality varies significantly. Allen’s has faced some criticism for selling defective engines in customer reviews, highlighting the importance of careful inspection. Reputable junkyards test and refurbish parts to meet safety standards, but used parts always carry some inherent risk compared to new OEM parts.

7. Do they provide vehicle towing or removal services?
Allen’s offers free towing and same-day pickup for junk cars. This service helps them acquire vehicles for parts recycling while providing customers with a convenient way to dispose of unwanted vehicles. Contact them directly for details on title requirements and other conditions.

They sold me the wrong motor for $400, I went to exchange it to get the right motor and then they added $150 and made it $550. So I took the head off to check it out in the parking lot and found that it was no good. They told me it was “as is” and I argued with them so they got me another motor, charged me another $50 core charge, and told me not to take it apart in the parking lot (because of course that would prove that they sold me another bad motor and if I do it in their presence then they can’t deny it), so I got it home and found that the motor was bad also. They won’t refund money and they have no other motor to exchange. Nice place to get ripped off!

These guys are professionals at robbing customers. Just take a moment to read their reviews and you will see how they rob every one of their customers.
Unfortunately, they are ROOKIES in the auto parts business which is why they have too constantly argue with customers about the wrong stuff they sell and the defective parts they sell to everyone. Stay far away from this place if you're smart.

If you are looking for one of the worst places to do business in Tampa?you found the place! This place goes out of their way to make you feel unwelcome, it looks like a third world country $h*&hole, every square inch of this place is covered with disclaimers, they could sell you a box full of used cat litter for a alternator and if you tried to return it? they would point to some sign you walked past to deny a refund, they give the worst warranty out of any salvage yard in Tampa, if you had a problem with a part they would would not honor any warranty anyways , there are plenty of better options to spend your hard earned dollars than this place, They apply core charges to everything and if you don't have a original receipt? they will deny that too

Had multiple transactions with this place & tried to be patient… 1) even for a salvage yard ,They’re parts are not in decent condition at all.. Yet they will greedily sell you a part knowing it’s in bad shape. adding to that the warranty system they have is predatory…. If you have a core, for an item purchased yesterday, they will not except it today with out the receipt at all .. even if you returned a core the same day without a receipt they will not reimburse your money…
